As told to their teacher - Mrs. Preheim

The Armour Kindergarten Class would like to give you a few pointers on how to prepare your Thanksgiving turkey and they had some ideas of what else they would like to eat at their feast.  Enjoy!

Bird Feeder Complex - Complete!

Here are the kindergartners by the new
bird feeder complex.

Our Bird Feeder Complex is complete and open for business!  Today we had our ribbon-cutting ceremony.  The kindergartners and last year's kindergartners came out to the lake today to join the SkillsUSA teens to listen to Mr. Barker and I say a few words.  Then after the ribbon cutting, the president of the Community Club announced that we are the "Citizens of the Month" for our town!  They also donated $200 for bird seed and some members volunteered to help fill the feeders.  Yay!  What a day!

Here's a photo of all of the students that had
a hand in this project.  The older students put a lot
of hard work into it, so a big thank you to these teens!
The kindergartners and 1st graders were checking out the
seed and wondering how the birds get the
seeds out.  I love their curiosity!
I explained to the young students that this is very special
and we will need to take good care of it.  I told them that
they should stay outside of the circle when they visit and
not touch the feeders.  I reminded them that they needed
to be like a ninja when they come to watch the birds being
slow and quiet, so as not to frighten the birds away.

We had very nice weather for this event!

Here is the crowd listening to Mr. Barker speak.

Here is the actual ribbon-cutting by a 1st grade girl.

Eden is announcing that that these students are the
"Citizens of the Month" for November!

Hallway Bird Display

We have been working on color words and adjectives, so there is no better subject that beautiful birds!  The kindergartners loved choosing a bird photo and describing it.  I've noticed that young students never mind writing about what they love!

Veteran's Day Program

Our school puts on a very nice Veteran's Day Program for the community.  Here are the elementary students singing their song.  I love to hear them sing!  The bottom photo is our Veteran's Day art for the lunch room.

Blue Ribbon School Celebration

Our high school received an award as a National Blue Ribbon School and we had a celebration.  Here is a {blurry} photo of all of our K-12 students.  In 2008, our Elementary School received the honor.  We are the only school in South Dakota where the elementary and high school both received the award!

I Can Handle It!

The Guidance counselor visits with the kindergartners every Thursday afternoon.  He read this book to the children and I borrowed it, so we could work on these strategies.  It is a good book that teaches kids that sometimes things don't go their way, but that's okay.  Just say, "I can handle it!"  If you hear your child say that at home, you'll know where that comes from.  You may want to praise them for saying that phrase and handling the situation.

Patriotic Songs

Our morning routine is to say the "Pledge of Allegiance" and sing a patriotic song or two.  I have taught them the following songs:

This Land is Your Land
You're a Grand Ol' Flag
America
This Is My Country
God Bless America
I'm Proud To Be An American

Two Artists

At the end of the day during free time, these two boys decided to draw huge trucks that were hauling pigs.  They worked so hard on their drawings, that I decided to share them with you.  11-7-18

A Superhero Surprise

On November 2nd, the 1st graders joined us as we had a visit from a publisher.  She read us a very good book titled, A Superhero Surprise, written by Danika Gordon, a teen-aged author.  American Family Insurance made sure that each child could have a copy of this book that teaches children to make good choices and be a superhero each day.

Halloween Day

They looked so cute in their Halloween costumes!
Here they are being a little crazy!
For this game the kindergartners bowled down
tissue paper rolls with a small pumpkin.

The kids thought this was fun!

This was the Mr. Ghost game that the children loved.  The ghost/child
had their back to the others.  The others would say, "Mr. Ghost!  Mr. Ghost!
What time is it?"  The ghost would said something like, "3 o'clock!"
The kids would take three steps closer to the ghost.  This would continue
until the group of kids got closer then the ghost would say,
"Time to eat you!" Then he'd turn around and try to catch them!
Oh my!  They were excited!

They had pizza, cupcakes and juice pouches for their lunch.

They Know 77!

Pumpkin Carving

Each year we talk about the life cycle of various plants and animals.  This was the perfect time to talk about the pumpkin.  Then they helped me prepare the pumpkin for carving.  Some kids like to dig in and some do not, but we get it done.

New Field Guides!

A surprise package came in the mail for the kindergartners!  A very kind person, who likes my bird program, donated $200 for me to buy a bird field guide for each of my students this year and next year.

This bird field guide is titled, "Birds of the Dakotas"
by Stan Tekiela.  I like that this field guide has
color tabs, so when a child sees a red bird
he goes to the red tabs and looks for his bird.

The kindergartners were so happy as they looked
through their very own field guide.  This
book will stay in the classroom until the end of
the school year.  That way we can put it to
good use and they will be very familiar with
it when they bring it home.

I loved all of the enthusiasm and smiles in the room!

"Look!  A Great Horned Owl!"

They loved the field guides!

Now it was time to make thank-you cards.

I was impressed with their drawings of birds!

Here's the crew with their new, bird field guides!

The Last Day of School!

What a great year we had in kindergarten!  The children worked so hard on their reading skills and it paid off in a big way because they ...
