Family Night #2

Our After-School Program brought in author, Jean L.S. Patrick from Mitchell, SD, to visit yesterday evening for an author talk at our elementary school. Each family that attended received $35 worth of Jean Patrick’s books. She talked about how she begins writing a book and how she goes through the process of writing. Mostly she told about three of her books. She first told about her book titled, “Long-armed Ludy”, a young woman from South Carolina who went to the first women’s Olympics in Paris and won the gold medal. The way Jean told her story was captivating and she held the interest of her audience young and old. She involved the audience by having them ask questions about the subjects and she had a few helpers as well.
The families received the book, "Who Carved the Mountain? The Story of Mount Rushmore". Jean was very interesting as she told the history of the carving of the mountain. They also received the book, “The Four Faces” about Prairie Dog and his friends searching for the four faces, but they thought they were looking for four animal faces. This book teaches about the Badlands and Black Hills region as well as its animals. It was a great author talk, so if you ever get the chance to hear Jean Patrick, you should go. Her books are very good! If you’d like to share your love of South Dakota history with children in your life, you should consider getting the last two books I mentioned. Our school does cool things like this!
